Friday Night Lights 8/28/09

Coach Lafayette Spears with part of the Hickman County High School Bulldogs. He is the line coach (I think). He was not going to coach this year and then in June they talked him into coaching one of the special teams again. The Dawgs lost to the Harpeth Indians on this particular night. Next week they travel to Marshall County! Then it will be a pajama party at Emily's for me, Liz, Susan and Emily. We did this last year and had a great time.
Not much else happening..... just being thankful for a wonderful life filled with loving family and friends.

Can't believe that the youngest member of the immediate Oakley/Emma Moss family will be 11 years old in three days. Garrett Oakley Choate will celebrate on Sept 3. Wish I could be with you in Columbus, Garrett!! Your great aunt Gayle loves you bunches.

Until next time . . . . . No matter what may be your lot in life, build something on it.

Friday Night Lights

It is Friday, it is football time. I am heading to Hickman County for their season opener tonight.
Actually I am going because my brother-in-law is going to honored for his coaching career with the Bulldogs. He also played football there back in the late sixties!!! (it is a surprise for him!!)
Hope to have some pictures to post tomorrow!!.

Until next time . . . . .I would rather walk with God in the dark than go alone in the light. Mary Brainard

Monday Musings

God knows the count of hairs on our head, he knows the plan he has for us... he lets us make some choices in our life but he knows when and how our end will come.
I say this as it has been a tough few days for members of my family. Riley Spears, the father of my brother-in-law, age 87 years set out in his truck pulling the camper to go to Canada to go bear hunting (again) along with his wife of 60 years. They were 90 miles from the border when they were involved in an accident. PaPaw Spears was killed almost instantly. But Granny, because of the way PaPaw had packed the back of the truck, had only bruises and minor scraps. She did have to spend overnight in the hospital in Grayling, MI waiting for her sons to come after her. One was spared and one was taken, side by side.
My brother-in-law is a football coach for HCHS in Centerville, TN. On Saturday the football team (-5or6) showed up at the funeral home in their shirts to pay their respects and honor their coach. They had a choice to come. What an awesome sight!!! The whole room became quite.
My heart breaks for my nieces Emily and Susan, but their faith in the Lord will carry them through. I have some terrific nieces --- all of them and a wonderful nephew -- all who believe and love the Lord.

Until next time. . . . .Count your blessings, one by one. . . .

Saturday fish fry, spoons, cards, good times.....

Spoons, just spoons. But not for eating last Saturday night --- but for playing SPOONS!!!! And some people really get into this game. If you have a shoulder problem -- do not play with Kyle and Garrett.

Kyle and Garrett had been here for about ten days and Pam and Troy came to get them so we all met at Liz's for a fish fry. Thanks Laff. Susan had taught the boys had to play spoons so of course we had to play!! But a 15 and 10 year old can get a bit rough in the action and they also learned to "scatter" the spoons.

Garrett is pointing at Norman and Kyle -- he must think they did something wrong.

I thought Kyle needed a haircut--
Emily thought he needed to shave.
She even bought him a razor! He is 15 and will be a sophomore. Norman told him he had to shave in the 8th grade.

Garrett is 10 -- soon to be 11!! They soon finished the game of spoons and started playing Rummy. Garrett is quite the little Rummy player. My father (who Garrett is named for--they never met, however) loved to play Rummy. He would have enjoyed a game with Garrett I know. He and Kyle used to play checkers.
Garrett could not shuffle the cards (neither can I) but he worked hard on it and soon had managed the task. He just really got his arms and tongue in some arwward positions.

We all had a good time and will look forward to our next visit --whether it will be it Tennessee or Ohio.

Until next time . . . . . Enjoy the simple things.

Saturday Sensations

On Saturday I did two things...... can you guess what they were?
Saturday morning Liz, Norman, Emily, Susan, Kyle, Garret, and I went to the Nashville Zoo. It was ICE DAY! Yes, it was hot. We went early, however. It was a great day. I think Kyle
really enjoyed having Norman along this time. We laughed a lot!!!

After lunch and back to my house Emily, Susan, Kyle and Garrett went to
the pool for some fun time. I went to watch then back it to the cool spot and
a nap. I cannot believe I took a nap! I never nap!! I guess the heat just got to me.

A fun time was had by all.

Until next time .....The upper crust is a lot of crumbs held together by their dough.

Someone Special

This is someone special to me but it took me a long time to realize that. This is my brother-in-law, Lafayette -- Laff to us. My sister, Liz, and Laff have been married for thirty years (last week). This man would do anything for me -- complain about it, but would do it. But for ten years I was mad at him, almost despised him. Why? Because he took away my best friend. Yes she was only about an hour and fifteen minutes away. But I was used to her being in the next room. He was special to my parents also. They adored him. And he loved them I think as much as his own parents. He was not a member of the church when he and Liz married and I really thought that would both her more than it did. He always went to church with Liz and soon become very involved as a member. He is now an Elder at Fairfield Church of Christ in Centerville. Every Sunday morning he calls around to his usual people to see how they are doing, encouraging them, whatever their needs may be. He also will call me, Emily and Susan to make sure we are up and ready for church. He is a football coach, football fanatic (Roll Tide), hunter and fisher (is that a word) and someone who would give you the shirt off his back. He works the farm for his parents who are not able and sometimes does not get anything out of it, but that is not why he is doing it. He does buy my dinner occasionally. We haven't always seen eye to eye but we know that from the start. He says I am crazy and I say he is crazier. He is first a Christian, a son, a brother, a husband, a father (to my wonderful nieces - Emily and Susan), and someone I am proud to call my brother-in-law.

Tuesday's Thoughts

Thinking--- really how much fun, simple fun Friday night and Saturday was with Emily and Susan was. We went to Lewisburg for breakfast and then drove around for awhile for me to take some pictures --- of course those two always wanted to drive away and leave me there.
We went to a very old church (but evidence tells us services are still held there) that the kids at Forrest tell Emily is haunted. Now come on. It was really a very quaint little church. (pictures later). Many, many old graves surrounded this church and some not so old. The scenery was beautiful. The drive was wonderful. And I suppose the best part was just spending time with the girls!!! Thanks for spending time with me.

Until next time .. . . . .The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.
